Dawless techno on a TR-808 & SH-101 | CONFORCE

video by Conforce

"About: This is a simple video jam describing how you can use a trigger out from for example your TR-808/TR08/TR-909 to another piece of external hardware with an arpeggiator or internal sequencer that allows synchronisation via trig or external clock in. It's a pre midi and din sync method to get two devices in sync with each other. The limitation of this sequencing technique makes it so cool and unique. The new Roland boutiques all have trigs in and out so you can also use the Boutiques for these kind of purposes. I often use the SH-01a to sequence an SH-09 for example.

It's something really simple and sometimes overlooked but very helpful if you want to work without a computer and midi or din sync. The sync is very tight. The way you trigger the SH-101 makes it sound very distinct and many classic techno records were made on these devices with this technique. The sequence on the SH-101 can be up to a 100 notes and the 808 pattern that trigs your 101 will simply just step through all the notes in a structure via your drum pattern.

One of the reasons the 101 is so much fun is that you can jam away on the octave switch and portamento with the sequencer running and it never sounds bad. 'Quote from a Patreon member'

Artists who are famous for using the SH-101 are Robert Hood, A Guy Called Gerard, Drexciya, Dopplereffekt, Fabrice Lig, Mathew Jonson and of course many more techno & Chicago producers that haven't been mentioned here."

Headlining talent also charts a zig-zagging course across today’s synthesizer infused pop landscape, from the vibrant electronic duo ODESZA, to the future soul of Blood Orange (playing in North Carolina for the first time), a return of utopian rockers YACHT, and even the comic stylings of Reggie Watts.

Experimentalists
Immersive noise and minimalist sonic-scapes from some of today’s most progressive experimental artists, including sunn O))), Ben Frost, Tim Hecker, Silver Apples, Oneohtrix Point Never, Quintron & Miss Pussycat, Olivia Block, Alessandro Cortini, and Lotic.

Ambient Music Innovators
A rich program of sustained tones and cascading moods led by Daniel Lanois, Brian Eno’s prolific Grammy winning protege, Suzanne Ciani, and the UK’s originators of ambient house The Orb.

Hip-Hop
GZA leads Moogfest’s strongest ever hip-hop and rap lineup, supported by a roster of emerging talent including Lunice, Tory Lanez, Denzel Curry, Dr. Dre protege King Mez, and Well$.

The Future of Creativity
Futurist philosophers set the tone for a mind-expanding conference. Keynotes by Dr. Martine Rothblatt, author, entrepreneur, transhumanist, inventor of satellite radio, and Jaron Lanier, a computer scientist and composer who has pioneered the field of virtual reality. Other visionaries include sound explorer Onyx Ashanti and his 'exo-voice' sonic prosthesis, Tod Machover from MIT Media LAB presenting his work in HyperInstruments, and Gil Weinberg and The Robotic Musicianship Group at Georgia Tech performing with Shimon, an improvising robotic marimba player that uses artificial intelligence.

R IS FOR ROLAND (Slices Special)

Published on May 5, 2015 Electronic Beats

"EB.TV #58 - 05.05.15
Electronic Beats TV presents a special Slices feature that presents the story behind R IS FOR ROLAND. Michal Matlak (aka Analog Roland Orchestra) served as the book’s central author, and alongside illustrator and photographer Tabita Hub he created an epic book dedicated to some of the classic Roland instruments that have played an integral role in shaping electronic music. Its collection of exclusive descriptions and photos, plus interviews and stories from the likes of Legowelt, Egyptian Lover, Jeff Mills, Mark Ernestus, Modeselektor, Lee Scratch Perry, Moby, Robert Hood, Mathew Jonson, make it clear that these machines can create emotional connections.

Bleep's Guide to Electronic Music

This one in via Scott, via Bleep: "Bleep's guide to Electronic Music is a 55 track compilation charting the historical emergence of electronic music by looking at landmark tracks from the 1930s up to present day.

Our aim with this selection of music is to show the length and breadth of the medium, providing a snapshot of the genres forms and styles, and the development of the artform. Whilst there are omissions and compromises that we have had to make, we hope that we achieve our aims and we do some justice to the variety of music that we love.

This compilation developed out of a project to create a Facebook timeline charting the development of electronic music from the late 19th Century until now."

For reference check out 120 Years of Electronic Music

The collection begins with Olivier Messiaen's Oraison from 1937 performed on Ondes Martenot & Theremin (you can find the original full track previously posted here and a beautiful cover on Buchla 200e and Haken Continuum from the late Richard Lainhart here):

"Originally composed by Olivier Messiaen, this beautiful and contemplative piece of music is a monumental moment in electronic music. Argued to be the first piece of purely electronic music written expressly for live performance on the Ondes Martenot, an instrument closely related to the Theremin."

The collection ends with James Blake's CMYK"

"At just 21 years old, London producer, James Blake releases on newly relaunched R&S Records.

At its core 'CMYK' is forged from a myriad of 90's R&B samples (Aaliyah, Kelis) their voices mangled, barely recognisable and thrown into a red-eyed fire of DSP and hours spent in the waveforms."

Impakt Percussion Synth

flickr By Chris Kann

Another manufacturer not previously featured on the site. Anyone know more about them? According to the bottom pic they were form Portland Oregon.

As you know Chris Kann has been uploading a ton of vintage synth scans. I'll feature some of the more interesting and rare items here, but not everything. Be sure to click through the flickr links in posts for more. Once there, on the right of the page you'll see "This photo also appears in" Synthesizer Brochures. You can click on that link to get to the full set in thumbnails.

Update via David in the comments:

"I know the intimate details about the rise and fall of Impakt Percussive Synthesizers. They were the first dynamic percussion electronic instruments, hit it hard it played loud hit it soft and it played soft) The inventor was Steve Lame (?) and marketed by his son Etienne. In 1971, I was the SE distributor for the production first production run by Rogers Mfg, an organ manufacturer in Portland.

The set had a foot pedal that would sweep through the tonal range. This was the primary selling feature. I sold two sets and got an endorsement from Charlie Watts (The 1972 Stones tour where Stevie Wonder opened) and Ollie Brown Stevie Wonder's drummer and Clare Fishers’ nephew. I have the only autographed drum by both aforesaid drummers.

I had demoed to David Hood, Muscle Shoals Swamp drummer, and various studio drummers; e.g., Robert Nix, Atlanta Rhythm Section and generated a lot of interest. The holdup was the foot pedal; I had sold the only two in existence, and Rogers wanted money before they made 1,000 pedals. I ended up with 900 synthesizers and the Lame folks sold the distributorship to a hotshot Fender rep who agreed I could warehouse them and rep his lines…I found handshake agreements were only as good as the paper they are written on….ended sending the drums back to Portland COD. Haven’t seen or heard from the Lames since.
I coulda been a contender if not for you (Steve), I could have been somebody…enough On the Waterfront references…

Have many more details if anyone is interested…I plan on selling the autographed drum on Amazon."

The Grandfather Paradox: A Journey Through 50 Years of Minimalistic Music

via FACT magazine where you'll find the full post including track listings.

Anyone know what that is to the left of him - the white slant?

"The Grandfather Paradox is a double-disc affair - the first CD mixed, the second CD unmixed. The time-travelling track selection is pretty faultless - kicking off with Movement 3 from Steve Reich and Pat Metheny's sublime Electric Counterpoint, and taking in the Balearic drift of Kenneth Bager, the stargazing kosmische of Conrad Schnitzler and Klaus Schulze (pictured), the hypnotic punk-funk of Liquid Liquid, exquisitely modulated post-rock-cum-electronic from To Rococo Rot, tonally fierce techno from Robert Hood and Ø (Pan Sonic's Mika Vainio) and a spot of lo-fi dystopian electro from the inimitable John Carpenter. Along the way we hit upon such muso touchstones as Young Marble Giants, Arthur Russell, Cymande, Moondog and Raymond Scott; extra points too for including Hawtin's pummelling remix of La Funk Mob."
